Lynda Benglis
Novy Bor Project I, 1997

Novy Bor Project 1 is a series of 9 unique hand blown glass sculptures. To complete this project, Lynda Benglis traveled to Ajeto Studio in The Czech Republic in December 1997, where she worked with master glass blowers.

Dissatisfied with the consistency of paint and the insistency of a canvas support, Benglis strives to become more physically involved with the organic matter of her artistic medium. She saw glass as a exciting new format through which to experiment and explore her process. Benglis's sculptures continue to powerfully evoke natural processes and forms. These symbolic elements are carried over in Novy Bor Project I.

Though this project was initially intended to be a multiple, when Benglis presented the initial group of unique sculptures, each was so powerful in its own right that it was decided to introduce them in the first exhibition at 529 West 29th Street.
