Food, Clothing, and Shelter, 1996
Food, Clothing, and Shelter consists of three series of color photogravures, each in an edition of 40: House, Walking Glove, and Hotdog.
In 1996 Dorfman+ invited Laurie Simmons to work with a master etcher to experiment in color trail proofing. Of the three images selected, only House was suitable for trial proofing and was ultimately produced in 10 unique trial states.
Simmons selected three images representing female domestic roles. The juxtaposition of female legs on each iconic object comments on the gendered function of even the most basic needs.
